About the scholarship

The Maasai Haile Jones Memorial Scholarship is offered annually to students who meet the following criteria.

Three scholarships are awarded annually to African-American high school seniors or college freshmen from San Jose, California majoring in English or Creative Writing.  

Another three scholarships will be awarded annually to Pacific Islander high school seniors or college freshmen from the state of California majoring in English or Creative Writing.

Maasai produced many memorable poems, essays, and short stories before he passed. His primary theme was social justice, especially for minority or oppressed people.
