iMocemoce

The spreading of the traditional mats and masi or tapa wall hangings was done immediately after your grandparents entered the home. This is called “iMocemoce” (pronounced e-mothey-mothey) or the traditional “bedding” in preparation for the rituals and ceremonies that would take place leading up to the day of your funeral. For nine days leading up to the funeral we received family and friends who brought more traditional mats, whale’s tooth, and yaqona (kava) and food. This was our way of working through the grieving process as we shared our stories, songs, and tears with all that came. On the day of your funeral a feast was held at the home to celebrate you and send you off on your journey. We carry you in our hearts always.
